A HAND-operated community apple crusher and press which will help people in West Devon make the most out of their apple harvest, even if they have a single tree, were put into operation for the first time this weekend. The devices have been bought by the Tavy and Tamar Apple Group with the help of a Community Projects grant of £730 from West Devon Borough Council. The Speidel apple mill and Vigo rack and cloth press were given their inaugural use recently, producing a delicious, golden juice from local apples which may otherwise have gone to waste. Apple Group chairman, Brian Lamb, said: 'We wanted to give those people with just one or a few apple trees the opportunity to turn their crop into a productive juice. 'Previously, we were using a big hydraulic press which is only suitable for large volumes of fruit. 'We are very grateful to West Devon Borough Council for its contribution which will allow more people to experience the joy of turning their apples into wonderful juice.' The cost of the new equipment has been match-funded with money raised by the group which has around 100 and has been running for 12 years. Council leader, Cllr Philip Sanders, said: 'This is a way of supporting a traditional and sustainable activity in our local community. 'The new crusher and press will allow more people to get involved and also help engage local school children. 'Ultimately, it could help preserve our world famous apple species by providing an accessible way to use up the apple harvest.' The Tavy and Tamar Apple Group has helped to plant seven orchards in the last four years and protect others from development. The group will be running its annual Bere Apple Fest on Saturday, October 4 at Bere Ferrers Church Hall from 1pm. There will be a full programme using the new machinery where orchard owners can bring their apples for crushing. Admission is free. Three charities will benefit from the day; Youth 2 Youth, Bere Food Bank and the Devon Air Ambulance. To find out more about the Tavy and Tamar Apple Group call Brian Lamb on 01822 841309.
