TAVISTOCK Canal will be spruced up and given a well-needed clean later this month, following a number of complaints from the public.

Tavistock Town Council has stepped into action after receiving several complaints about the amount of rubbish seen in the canal.

Although it runs through the Meadows, Tavistock Town Council is not responsible for the maintenance of the canal, but after receiving the complaints, the council contacted the company that is.

Hydro Power in Mary Tavy, a company under South West Water, will be doing a sweep of the canal in a few weeks' time, to clear the canal bed of accumulated rubbish.

Debbie Ashton, from the town council, said: 'Because of the recent heat, the water levels in the canal have gone down and so it has become apparent how much rubbish is actually in there.'

The sweep is due to take place around the middle of July.
