THE bells of St Nonna's Church in Bradstone rang out last week, to mark the 40th birthday celebrations of the Churches Conservation Trust.

St Nonna's was among 70 historic churches across the country taking part in the event.

The trust cares for more than 340 of England's finest historic churches which are no longer required for regular parish worship — including St Noona's.

The church boosts a beautiful early 17th century gatehouse, and is mostly 12th century in origin. The bells are not used very often so Colin Kneebone, the captain of Lifton bellringers, gave them a special oil before the peal.

From its tower six bells rang out a quarter peal of Grandsire Doubles, conducted by Geoff Hill from Lamerton. Those taking part were Colin Kneebone, George Mudge — the captain of Tavistock Bellringers — along with Sheila Williams, Kate Jennings and John Cook.
