Withycombe 2nd XV 21
Tavistock 2nd XV 10
A DISAPPOINTING result for Tavistock who had notched up two impressive results against Liskeard and Topsham before this game, but a performance in which they can take pride.
Tavistock were first off the mark with a Martin Credicott penalty, following good work by the pack, especially man of the match Jim Jeffries.
A nightmare five minutes ensued, when Tavistock were seemingly in control and threatening a try. Withycombe made three breaks and scored from all of them, leaving Tavistock to rue poor tackling and communication.
In the second half, led by scrum half Richard Staniland, Tavistock battered the home defence and a breakthrough looked certain.
It came ten minutes into the half down the far right as second row Simon Thompson crashed over from ten yards following a pop-off from Jeffries after a driving scrum.
Tavistock spent the rest of the second half encamped in the Withycombe 22 but a mixture of bad luck, poor finishing and a try, ruled out because they had been given a penalty instead of the advantage, dashed their hopes.
Tavistock were dealt a blow, with 15 minutes to go when Jeffries had to come off with a badly twisted ankle.
The game petered out into a stalemate for the last five minutes and Withycombe were grateful to hear the final whistle.
