AN exhibition of hand-printed black and white photographs of Dartmoor taken over the last four years has gone on display at the High Moorland Visitors Centre in Princetown.

In Elements of Dartmoor landscape photographer Piers Howell has captured 21 images with a different view of some well-known locations achieved with the use of wide angle-lenses.

'The one necessary element common to all good landscape photography is the quality of light. Winter, especially November to January can provide a magical light if the weather conditions are right,' said Mr Howell.

'The low winter sun brings the shape of the landscape into relief, and the shadows of prehistoric stones are much longer than their height. Changeable, stormy weather can produce a patchwork of clouds and sunshine when the view stretches many miles across open moorland,' he explained.

Mr Howell first became interested in photography in the 1970s when he lived in Hong Kong. He started walking on Dartmoor in the 1980s.

Elements of Dartmoor runs until Wednesday, May 29. Mr Howell will be at the High Moorland Visitor Centre, Dartmoor Gallery, every Sunday, between 2-4pm, for the duration of the exhibition.
