I WRITE in response to the notice by West Devon Borough Council as published in last week?s Times, under Section 30 and 38 of the Local Government Acts, that this entails an increase in my rates on a Band C property by the sum of £80.56.

This means that since 1997 the rates have increased by 95.5%, far in excess of inflation over the same period.

Based on the figures as stated it means that the increases in council tax since 1997 are as follows:

a) Devon County Council by 99.62% to £845.39.

b) Devon and Cornwall Police by 127.72% to £100.79.

c) West Devon Borough Council by 60.66% to £133.90.

d) Tavistock Town Council by 87.17% to £60.57.

Making a grand total of £1,140.65.

Many of your readers who are pensioners and low paid workers may find this increase is too much of a burden. It would be appreciated, therefore, if the political parties without blaming each other can urgently resolve this matter instead of tinkering around the edges, and I look forward to reading their replies within your columns.
