POLICE say they are prioritising work in the area of Tavistock Viaduct after reports of rocks being thrown from there over the last few days and fears that they could have seriously injured someone walking beneath.

The West Devon Neighbourhood Policing Team say they have received reports of objects being thrown from the viaduct and Viaduct Walk between Quants Park and Bolt House Close.

Officers were first made aware of the incident in the early hours of Sunday, March 15 after a concerned resident noticed some significant damage to a Mercedes vehicle that had been parked underneath on King Street.

Police were again alerted to further issues along the viaduct on the evening of Monday, March 16 where another rock was thrown — this time avoiding any vehicles. A search was conducted of the area but unfortunately no one was found nearby.

Neighbourhood team leader Sgt Chris Chaloner said: ’These incidents are being taken seriously. It is lucky that none of our community were walking in the vicinity at the time the rocks were thrown down as this could have been the cause of a significant injury.

’The police at Tavistock will be prioritising work in the area over the coming weeks. Local PCSOs have already been in the area in an attempt to identify where these rocks are coming from. Targeted patrols will be conducted throughout the day and night to deter any persons away who are not using the pathway for legitimate reasons. We would like to ask the residents nearby to continue to report any suspicious activity or behaviour in the area so that the police are able to coordinate a timely response.’
