91-year-old is told day centre visits must end

THE mayor of Tavistock, Cllr Ken Sanders, this week announced his resignation as leader of the town council, due to ill health.

Cllr Sanders has heart problems and has been advised by consultants to take things easy. He took up office in May ? the third time he has served as the town mayor.

Cllr Sanders said: ?I have been advised by my cardiac consultants that it would be sensible to avoid all stresses and strains.

?It was a hard decision to make ? I have been a councillor for 16 years and thoroughly enjoyed it and I shall be sad in many ways to say goodbye, but on the other hand, as my children said, ?You have to think of yourself first?.?

Deputy mayor Marjorie Corner will take on the duties of mayor until a new mayor is appointed at the next meeting of the full council on November 5.

Cllr Corner said she wished Cllr Sanders and his family all the best for now and the future.

?It?s sad but this really is the only thing to do,? said Cllr Corner.
