THE Closed Meeting last month produced some excellent scores by ladies from Tavistock Golf Club with several players cutting their handicaps with their nett scores. In division one first was Sue Coles with a nett 71, second, Sybil Cole 73, and third Anne Russell, 76, on count back from Elaine Cooper. In division two Lynn Swift, nett 71, was first with Lynn Alderman, 72, second with Chris Kelly, third, with 73. The senior ladies? prize was won by Margaret Foster with a nett 75. The last open of the year also took place last month in fine autumnal weather. The autumn foursomes always attracts a good field and this year was no exception with 80 ladies playing a course which was in excellent condition. The winning pair were Mo Huggins and Lorna Rolfe (Okehampton) with 37 points on count back from Bev Ruth (Tavistock) and Jane Wright (Staddon Heights). Sue Coles and Elizabeth Holmes (Tavistock) won the Betty Smith Rose Bowls awarded to the best Tavistock pair. The monthly medal was played in conjunction with the Ladies? Golf Union pendant. In division one first was Dawn Philott, nett 74; second was Elaine Cooper, 76. In division two Ruth Myott was the winner with a nett 69 on count back from Julie Harding - Ruth therefore won the LGU pendant. The monthly Stableford was played in conjunction with the Caddies Trophy and the Allen Candlesticks. The Caddies Trophy, open to all those who caddied for club teams during the year, was won by Margaret Burn with 36 points. The Allen Candlesticks is for the best pair of combined scores and was won by Elizabeth Holmes and Liz Loosmore with 75pts. Winner of division one was Sally Hills on 42pts and division two by Pat Wylie with 39pts. The Grandmothers? Cup, played with an extra medal, was won by Dawn Gawman, nett 75; in division one by Trudie Luke, 77, and second with 82 was Fran Horton. In division two first was Dawn Gawman with 75 and Jan Wells second with 77. The ladies? section held their annual meeting when Norma Thewlis was elected lady captain and Sue Bailey her vice captain. The ladies? section is believed to have been formed at the same time as the men?s section in 1890. However early records for the ladies no longer exists so the list of lady captains is incomplete. The first recorded captain was Mrs Fox in 1912 and the first lady to have her name on the lady captains? board was Mrs E Wordley on 1927. ?I am sure that the lady captains from those early years would be proud of how the ladies section has grown and what we have achieved,? said Mrs Thewlis. ? Today with more than 120 playing lady members, we realise how much we owe to those early lady golfers. They did not have the graphite shafts, rescue clubs and hi-tec drivers but I suspect that they would still give us a good game.?
