PLANS for an RAF Harrowbeer 1940s rvent in 2014 are going ahead, despite the setback of this year's event making a loss.

The show, held in August, was hugely popular with visitors, with estimates of around 3,000 people attending over the two days of the event. However, it was not as successful financially as hoped, due to the first day being washed out by a summer gale.

Chairman Stephen Fryer said: 'We have had many positive comments and are pleased everyone enjoyed the event.

'However, we were relying on donations from visitors to enable us to pay for the attractions and the gale really hurt us in this respect, as both visitors and some exhibitors were put off coming on the first day.

'Even with a grant from West Devon Borough Council towards the arts aspect of the event and a donation from The Moorland Garden Hotel towards the replica Spitfire, we made a loss of about £1,500. However, we will go ahead with the 1940s event next year.'

The popular replica MkIX Spitfire has already been booked to return to the former World War Two airfield so visitors can again enjoy the sight and sound of the huge, 27 litre Merlin engine running.

Stephen said: 'We would like to thank all those who came and made this year's event so enjoyable, especially those who, in good wartime spirit, braved the Saturday gale!

'We look forward to welcoming you back next year, on August 16 and 17, 2014.'
