CADET novice sailors of all ages along with instructors and two trustees of the Belinda O'Flynn fund are seen standing proudly by the latest addition to Weir Quay Sailing Club's dinghy training fleet. The 'RS Vision' dinghy, which was bought thanks to a donation from the Belinda O'Flynn Trust and funds raised by club members, represents a valuable extra alongside the other 15 club dinghies used by the trainee sailors every Friday evening at Weir Quay throughout the summer. Two of the Belinda O'Flynn trustees ventured onto the Tamar, to see close up some of the water-borne antics and enjoyment had by the Cadets. At Weir Quay, sailing instruction is given by a team of RYA qualified sailing instructors ably assisted by experienced club sailors and backed by a number of safety-support boats. Several club members take out their own dinghies on Friday evenings and when the fleet from Cargreen sails upstream, it is not unusual to see the crews of some 30 dinghies having fun on the water. Starting Saturday on a falling tide, two crews in the 'RS Vision' lapped a course along the Tamar in one-and-a-half hour sessions. A safety boat was on continuous watch so at least three members were afloat over the 24 hours. Tired but content, the last crew ashore at Sunday lunchtime was welcomed by organiser, Steve Kirby. Steve said that the splendid effort is on target to raise a much needed top-up of £1,200 towards a new safety-craft and keeping the training fleet operational. Steve added he will gladly receive more sponsorship from members.
