Yelverton Villa 2

Callington Town 3

YELVERTON Villa kicked off the season with a creditable result against East Cornwall League one side, Callington Town.

Villa gave an encouraging first half performance, defending resolutely and creating chances on the break, which they failed to convert. However, it was Callington who applied most of the pressure, and it needed some fine goalkeeping from Villa James Northey and timely clearances from Adam Measom to keep the scores level at half time.

The second half was only three minutes old when an injured Northey had to be replaced in the Villa goal - replaced by central defender, Cadan Lowther who took the gloves. Villa looked for attacking options through Ben Pridham and Josh Vernon, but were caught out at the back by Callington who eventually broke the deadlock.

Villa came close when Vernon broke down the right before crossing to an unmarked Ian Harvey, but the Callington keeper did enough to prevent the Equaliser.

Callington scored their second goal and Villa lose their second goalkeeper, as an injured Lowther was forced to retire.

Defender, Sean Gill replaced him in goal, and was unlucky to concede a penalty late in the game, which Callington duly converted to make it 3-0.

To their credit, Villa did not let their heads drop and, inside the last five minutes, they fought back with fine finishes from James Young and Ben Maughan.
