THE semi-finals and final of the Tribute South West of England Winter Foursomes competition were played at Yelverton on March 16, after delays due to the unprecedented rainfall.
Yelverton professional Tim McSherry and his playing partner Karl Eastwood took on county scratch golfers Joe Yorke and Sammy Giles in a closely fought contest which was won two and one by the Yelverton professional and his partner. The second semi final saw Yelverton members George Graham and Mike Hicks take on Tiverton members Abbie Moyes and her partner James Lambsden. In another closely fought battle, Mike Hicks needed his putt to drop on the 18th to force extra holes, but saw his putt lip out, therefore giving a 1up victory to the Tiverton pair, which took them in to the final.
The final between Yelverton`s Tim Mcsherry and Karl Eastwood against Tiverton`s Abbie Moyes and James Lambsden started in continued sunshine but a chilly wind. The Yelverton pair were two up after 12 and looked to be cruising. However they lost holes 13 and 14 and the Yelverton pair found themselves all square and in a fight. Holes were halved with the match all square going up the 18th. A superb approach shot by Abbie to ten feet allowed her playing partner to get in close to get the four and win the hole and the match.
The plate competition was also played and this was won by Yelverton member Nick Davis and his playing partner Dave Purnell, who scored 38 points in the stableford foursomes format.
