KELLY College sent 35 swimmers to the Amateur Swimming Association South West regional short course championships held at Millfield School in Somerset. The meet was a great success for the Kelly swimmers and included a world record by Hannah Russell, aged 17, in the S12 category of the 100m backstroke.

Medallists for the open events were Steph Reynolds (18) gold in 200m backstroke, silver in 50m backstroke and bronze in 200m IM and 100m backstroke. Milly Furneaux (17) gold in the 50m breaststroke and silver in the 100m breaststroke. Tom McLagan (17) and Leah Picillo (16) both took silver in their 400m Individual Medley events, whilst it was bronze for Harry Hathaway (16) in the 1500m freestyle and Chloe Barrow (15) in the 200m butterfly.

Kelly Junior medallists were Chloe Barrow with gold in 50m,100m and 200m butterfly, Emily Cutler (15) gold in 200m backstroke, silver in 400m IM and bronze in 100m backstroke. Bronze medals went to Ben Staig in the 400m IM and Will Luckham-Down in the 50m breaststroke. Taku Chaza (13) swam a good strong 100m butterfly to gain his national qualifying time for 2014. Kelly College open records were broken by Steph Reynolds in the 50m backstroke with a time of 28.91 and also in the 200m backstroke where Steph took 4 seconds off the old record with a time of 2.09.83. Milly Furneaux in her gold winning performance also broke the Kelly College open record in the 50m breaststroke. In all Kelly swimmers enjoyed 93 personal best times.

Robin Brew, director of performance and swimming at Kelly College, said: 'This was one of the best weekends of swimming performance I have seen in many years. The Kelly swimmers were outstanding in and out of the pool. Many of the records that were set in the era of Sharron Davies and the international team in the mid-1980s and 90s are starting to tumble.'
