AT Hurdwick Golf Club, from October right through to the end of March, the members play through the season, come hail, a lot of rain or shine. A strong field of some 37 members of varying handicaps, took part. The final of its Winter Handicap competition, although delayed somewhat due to weather, was played three weeks ago. It was contested between Neil Edwards (handicap 7) and Mark Gardiner (handicap 6).
The final was played in the best of spirits throughout and Mark thought he had it in the bag with three up and three to play but Neil fought back to make it all square after 18 holes. The match went to the second extra hole where Mark eventually won!
It was a superb end to a super competition by two excellent ambassadors for the club.
The inaugural playing of the Schofield Trophy, donated by the present captain, took place at the club. The new competition has added to the numerous competitions that the members enter throughout the year. It was well attended with some 34 competitors taking part in what turned out to be a testing day, it being cold and windy.
The outright winner, with a superb 42 points, was Mark Ashton.
Most of the scores were close with prizes going to ninth place, 32 points, and above up to second 35 points by Neil Edwards on countback over Jim Hassan.
Pauline Allen came in fourth with 34 points to show the men how to handle the course in quite tricky conditions.
