Devon D Whitchurch Wayfarers v Uplyme and Lyme Regis ON a glorious sunny afternoon Whitchurch were soundly beaten by a strong Uplyme team in just under three hours. Batting first Whitchurch faced an opening attack of Dinnason (2-25) and young prospect Davies (2-14) causing immediate problems with late swing and accurate bowling. In the third over Ashley Woodrow was taken off to hospital for 23 stitches after deflecting a delivery into his chin. Three wickets then fell in a flurry leaving Whitchurch reeling on 21-3. Bob Powell (4) and Rob Bone then weathered the storm playing with admirable caution until Powell was unlucky to be caught off an outside edge. Bone (12) showed considerable fortitude as he held on while wickets fell around him; blocking most deliveries and scoring when the opportunity arose including a lovely cover drive. Batey (5-10) proved to be almost unplayable as he quickly wrapped up the innings. A valiant 14 from Darren Sambells wagged the tail briefly. Whitchurch finished on 88 with 39 extras illustrating the difficulties faced by the batsmen. With a quick return to the field Uplyme set about their task in a manner suggesting that they wished to start their return trip very soon. They had not taken into account that the Whitchurch bowling and fielding was in stark contrast to the batting. Demonstrating an enthusiasm and vigour that was 'the best seen from the first team for a number of years' Uplyme were made to work for their runs. Both Billy Barriball (1-31) and Josh Vernon (1-20) asked stiff questions of the Uplyme openers. Batey (6) was well caught by Powell behind the stumps and Thom (0) fell lbw to a particularly quick delivery from Vernon. With a bigger total to defend this attack would have been a match for most sides. As it was, 89 was not a defendable total for Whitchurch and Uplyme ran out easy and deserved eight wicket winners.
