ON an extremely warm day in July, more than 100 young people from West Devon travelled to Torbay to compete against the rest of Devon and represent the district in the Devon Games to Inspire.
The team, coordinated by local sports development charity OCRA, were represented in 11 events, winning six medals and were fourth osition overall.
West Devon results: badminton boys, sixth place, girls fifth; cricket third; gymnastics third; hockey second; high five netball fifth; netball second; sailing fifth; triathlon (Year 9 and 10) first; triathlon (Year 7 and 8) second and volleyball girls sixth.
The whole team should also take credit for their superb levels of fair play and sportsmanship — ensuring it was a team West Devon can be very proud of. OCRA development manager Stuart Lord was full of praise for the team.
He said: 'It's always fantastic seeing so many young people aged 6-16 years coming together and enjoying such a brilliant day. Seeing so many smiling faces in the green West Devon t-shirts is a testament to the job done by the DGTI organisers, the fantastic people from local clubs that train and lead the West Devon teams and Matt King from OCRA for organising the trials, training and event opportunities for Team West Devon.
'The team were very gracious and polite, both in victory and defeat, which is key in ensuring the success of this wonderful event. Congratulations to the whole of the West Devon team for being such good ambassadors for the area and for achieving a superb fourth place finish.
'Special thanks must go out to all the team managers who have had to be extremely flexible and have worked tirelessly to ensure that individuals have an enjoyable experience when training and where involved in the event.'
