THE OKEHAMPTON U14s brought their season to a conclusion by hosting this four team round robin on Sunday. Persistent rain failed to keep the crowds away, as plenty of fans enjoyed six keenly fought mini matches of ten minutes each way. Oke had a mixed morning as they won one, drew one, and lost one of their matches. First up they saw off Exeter Saracens 31- 0 with tries from George Ogbourne (2), Ben McKenna- Smith (2) - one after a well-judged cross kick from fly half Joseph Stratton. who also converted three. A good piece of follow up play also brought a rare try for Rioux Thomas. The second match saw the boys play out a dour 0-0 draw with Midlands touring side Dudley-Kingswinsford in a game that was littered with handling errors. Hardly surprising given the terrible weather conditions and shortened halves. Finally Oke just came up short in a fiercely contested battle with unbeaten Welsh tourists Pentyrich. A great solo first half chip and chase try from Ben McKenna-Smith gave the hosts a 5-0 interval lead. However, the visitors took advantage as injuries and fatigue took the toll on the Okes and they finally succumbed 10-5 to two late tries. n AT the Devon U13s sevens festival held at Tavistock RFC, Okehampton U13s won the plate competition. In the group stage Oke beat Torquay and lost to Cullompton, resulting in them progressing to the knock out stages of the Plate competition. A quarter final against Kingsbridge was closely fought, with a 14-14 score at full time. Five minutes of extra time was to follow but with the golden try rule applying. DaiChi had the ball and a swift pass to George D saw him dive over to secure victory for Oke. The semi final against Crediton was played out in torrential rain but Oke eased through with a 34-0 result to reach the finals against local rivals and hosts, Tavistock. TAVISTOCK U13s had two teams in the event with the Barbarians team showing superb spirit, captained by Luke Kewandowski and some great individual play by Jake Holbourg and Tom Mackenzie. They met their match in the shield quarter finals when Barnstaple beat them 15-5. The Tavistock first team went through to the plate quarter finals having beaten Barnstaple but losing to Devonport Services in the group stages. The quarter final against Teignmouth had the team fired up and a try from Jude White and Freddie Williams saw Tavistock through to the next stage. The semi final was against a large Newton Abbot team who scored in the first 30 seconds and were two tries up in five minutes but tries from Freddie and Jude and Tom Pearson gave a 24-10 win for Tavistock and into the plate final for the first time in the team's history - a step up from the Shield final two years ago. Tavistock U13s 12 Okehampton U13s 14 IN the final itself with the rain still bucketing down, the home side took the lead but Oke responded with a counter try by Noah. Once again Tavistock gained the upper had with a second try, which went unconverted. Okehampton battled hard in the centre of the pitch and in set plays to win and keep possession knowing their only chance of victory was to score again and convert. Tavistock were 12-7 up with a minute to go but for Oke an injured Tom S ran with the ball, shaking off defenders to cross between the posts to make it 12-14. Nathan converted to the cheers of their supporters and the whistle confirmed Oke as plate winner. A great game by two exhausted teams playing the sevens format for the first time. Well done to the Okehampton coaches and team (Tom S, Nathan, George H, George D, Mo, Daniel, Brad S, DaiChi, Kai, Noah) - a fine end to the season. The Oke team thanked Tavistock for organising the festival and the other teams for their play and sportsmanship. Tavistock RFC thank Kirk Lewandowski, Christine Grove, Simon Fuller, Rees Kenyon, Pete Rodgers, Lisa Hair and all the other unsung helpers from Tavistock Rugby club who make the whole day run smoothly. Okehampton U12s 56 Exeter Saracens U12s 0 THE last game of the season saw Okehampton travel to Exeter Saracens and come away with an emphatic win. Full credit must go to the whole squad for their determination and commitment throughout the entire game - whether with an Okehampton or Saracens shirt on as the latter had a shortage of players. The Oke side all showed the same consistency they have all season, with strong running, great interlinking between backs and forwards and hard hitting tackles. Oke tries came from Daniel Tomkins (2), Will Cunningham (3), James Stevens, Joshua Burgoyne and a great first try of the season for Sonny Luxton. Conversions from James Close (3), Daniel Wonnacott (3), Jake Laing-Taylor and Joshua Burgoyne. The game was played in great spirit and rounded off a successful season for Oke, which they should all be proud of. The team thanked the all the dedicated parents/grandparents for trekking around the countryside to training and matches and giving their invaluable support. Truro RFC U12s 12 Tavistock U12s 47 ONE minute into the game and Truro spotted an undefended blind side at a ruck deep in their own half and broke through the line to score. Another try for Truro followed the cruellest of bounces from a clearance kick and Tavistock were 12-0 down. Despite this their heads did not drop and Tavistock came out fighting. Their pack halted and turnrf over the Truro attacks and starting to put pressure on the Truro ball and soon pulled back tries by Henry Varndell-Dawes — returning clearance kicks with interest three times. Further intense pressure from Edward Tait created a fumbled ball for him to pounce on over the try line. This gave Tavistock the confidence to take control and use their backs' pace and forwards' strength. Henry Varndell-Dawes touched down from his own tap penalty and Sam Essex benefiting to score from a blindside run by Harry Edwards from a mid pitch scrum. Harry Richardson, James Roisseter and Jaxom Cann created havoc in the Truro lineouts and Dan Pett kept the ball moving out of some fiercely contested rucks, feeding the Tavistock backs. Tom Scott and James Kenyon made several telling runs and tackles on the wings only to be thwarted by strong defensive tackling by the home side. Simple effective rugby with great use of space and a heads up attitude gave Tavistock the platform they needed to finish the game on a high. Conversions came from Harry Edwards (3), Edward Tait (2) and Kiran Warner. Okehampton U10s 80 Exeter Saracens U10s 10 IN this end of the season match Okehampton wanted to finish on a high...and so they did. There were three tries in the first 10 minutes from Ethan and Jacob. Oke were on top form and their team work was exceptional with passing from Alex and Morgan. Oke took the lead with another four tries by half time, three of which were from Jacob, with Ethan making a full pitch run to score again and Joe and Alex also making the touch line made Oke seem invincible. Exeter stepped up their game in the second half, scoring two tries but Oke were not about to be beaten, with Jacob crashing through Exeter's defence line and getting to the touch line to score. Isaac ripped the ball left right and centre, Cameron charging like a bull and Joe and Alex tackling strongly. Ethan and Morgan scored another four tries to make it 12-2. Holly sprang into action for Oke driving forward while Elliot, Matt and Holly all scoring for Oke, who were undeniably the best team. Well done to the Oke players for also playing on the opposition side. Try scorers for Oke: Ethan 5. Jacob 4, Elliot 2, Matt, Holly, Joe, Morgan and Alex. Launceston U9s 35 Tavistock U9s 40 BOTH teams were introduced to cold and wet conditions for the final match of the season. The home team opened the scoring despite an encouraging defensive effort from Tavistock. The remainder of the first half was dominated by Tavistock who scored seven tries that were unanswered, with a brace from Matthew D and Luke T with others from Ryan, Seb and Henry. Although there were occasions where Tavistock panicked while in possession and under pressure from their opponents, they managed to compose themselves by slick, pop up passes and the tries soon followed. The second half was an entirely different affair. Both teams varied their line up and once more Launceston opened the scoring. Tavistock struggled to maintain the first half momentum and there was only one solitary score from James compared to seven from the home team. Tavistock were guilty of turning over possession far too easily by trying long cut out passes or spilling the ball. Launceston U9s 45 Tavistock U9s 45 IT was Launceston who scored first but Tavistock regrouped and dug in deep. Matt D opened for the visitors before Luke T, Henry and James added more tries in reply to five more scores from Launceston. The game was building up to a crescendo as only one score separated the teams going into the final half. Launceston once more opened the scoring and the tension built. Tavistock were the more determined and once more some slick precise passing paid dividends leading to tries for Luke T and James and a fine hat trick from Matthew D. Launceston could only repond with two more tries. The Tavistock boys thoroughly deserve the applause for continuing to improve and their game all bodes well for next season. Okehampton U9s 40 Exeter Saracens U9s 20 THIS was a miserable wet day for the last match of the season. Okehampton were captained by Ben. Adam scored first for Oke with a quick first try, sprinting half the pitch; this was followed by another by him later on. Lachs took advantage of a loose ball, passed to Shea, onto Will to Callum before Saracens regained possession. Oke were the dominant team with superb attack and defence. A turnover ball close to the try line resulted in Lachs for Oke passing to Callum and he charged through the defence to score. Will also scored one in the first half. Shea, back from injury, tackled relentlessly. But it was not all Okehampton and the Exeter side scored two in the half. The second half saw Saul weaving throughout for the first of his four tries for Oke. Newcomer Alex put in the tackles while Flynn pulled out all the stops for with his tackling. Exeter responded with two tries in the second half. Okehampton U9s 25 Exeter Saracens U9s 15 THIS match showed commitment from all the Oke team with some good passing. Adam scored two tries with another from Will in the first half with Exeter scoring one. The rain came down but did not dampen the players' spirits. The second half saw two tries from Will and one from Saul to two from the visitors. Shortie set off at a blistering pace but was intercepted by Exeter while Finn for Oke chased to slow down the opposition, working with Alex to put pressure on to force them into touch. This was a good end to a successful first season of contact rugby. There was good support play from Toby, Josh, Archie G, Jacob and Dan. Player of the match was awarded to the whole team today as they all put in 100% effort. The team say a big thank you to Clare, Dave and Gangley for their continued support in training the boys and for all their hard work. OKEHAMPTON U8s travelled to Ivybridge for their last games of tag in the U8s festival before they move on to contact next season. The Oke side played in a pool of five teams with Devonport Services, Totnes, OPMs and local rivals Tavistock. The Oke boys played well together with lots of interchanging; using the whole squad to good effect they came away with three wins and a defeat. RESULTS: Okehampton 5 tries (Grady (2), Daniel (2) and Cain) Tavistock 3 tries; Okehampton 5 (Cain, Cameron and Grady(3) Totnes 2; Okehampton 2 (Thomas J and Billy1) OPMs 6; Okehampton 5 (Cain, Billy and Grady) Devonport 2. It was a good end to the season for the Okehampton boys after a season of missed games because of bad weather and they are all looking forward to contact rugby next season.
