Yelverton Bohemians
v Brockenhurst
AFTER a gap of nearly three years, cricket has returned to Walkhampton.
As a result of co-operation between the local community and Yelverton Bohemians Cricket Club and many months hard work on pitch preparation, the first game was played there on Friday evening, a 20/20 match with touring side Brockenhurst.
Brockenhurst won the toss and decided to bat first. A lively wicket and tight bowling from Yelverton saw the visitors bowled out for 79 runs. Chris Pearson 2-1, Sam Betts 3-15 and Sandy Ralph 3-12 were the home side's main wicket takers.
Yelverton found runs difficult to get. With three balls remaining, they needed three runs to win. Ben Pearson, calmly steered the ball for four, ending up with 37 not out.
All Yelverton's third X1 home games will be played at Walkhampton this year along with some friendlies, evening league and junior games. With the facility up and running again it is also hoped to resurrect some of the great local traditional games that used to be played there, such as the annual game against a church side and hopefully tempt some more of the former Walkham Valley CC players out of retirement.
