FOUR Buckland Monachorum pupils proved they were a winning team at a fun-packed event giving schools a taster of different and inclusive sports and activities.

The St Andrew’s C of E Primary students won gold competing against other schools at new age kurling, an indoor version of the winter game which sees competitors slide stones along a polished floor instead of ice. The mini-tournament was the main event at the Devon Ability Games held at Plymouth’s Life Centre on January 22, which saw children from across the county take part.

The St Andrew’s School team were overall winners of the primary school category of the new age kurling competition. ‘We didn’t expect to get through to the second round, let alone win, as it was our first competition,’ one of the team, Year 5 pupil Daisy, said.

The young people went on to spend a fun-filled day trying out all the other new sports and activities that were on offer.

Deputy headteacher, Justin Jones said all the children had reflected the spirit of the School Games and its six values: teamwork, honesty, respect, self-belief, passion and determination.

He said: ‘St Andrew’s children did themselves proud demonstrating great skill and values, which are such an important part of their learning journey throughout life in an inspiring, inclusive, action packed day of sport – children loved it and they got to come away with their gold medals.’
