WHITCHURCH Wayfarers won the Colin Kirby Cup against Callington by one run in a thrilling match.

Batting first Whitchurch were immediately in trouble losing Billy Barriball first over for a duck. Brother Charlie and Matt Witcher then put on 30 runs at a fast rate before Witcher played on for 11. Tom Sherrell joined Barriball for another quick fire partnership of 12 before the wickets started to tumble. Mortimore (3 for 22) and Hunn (2-22) causing the damage in the top order with Murray-Distin and Jacobs both picking up 2 wickets each.

A total of 74 didn't appear to be anything like enough. Although Callington lost two early wickets they reached the half way point on a comfortable 45 for 2. The Barriball brothers then took the vital wickets of Hughes (21) and Snowden (12) who had put on 29 runs between them. The runs then dried up as B Barriball (1-15) and C Barriball (1-7) bowled a tight line. The next seven overs producing just 16 runs. Needing just 12 runs off the last three overs the odds were still very much with Callington. Dan Poole snared two wickets for seven runs in his two overs and Charlie Barriball just the two in his last over.

On the last ball Vanstone (13) was run out attempting to effect a tie.
