Devon D Whitchurch firsts v Ashburton THE Whitchurch Wayfarers' first XI followed up last week's win at Uplyme with another fine performance at home to Ashburton. Ashburton made a great start with Nicholls (33) and Durman adding 112 for the first wicket. The Whitchurch bowlers were able to do little to stem the flow of runs off Durman's bat. Charlie Barriball made the decisive breakthrough bowling Durman for an excellent 78. After that Ashburton had little resistance. Churchill made 15 but of the rest none scored more than five as Ashburton collapsed to 178 all out. Charlie Barriball with 2-43, Sambells with 2-43, while Bone, 3-21 and Poole 3-9 ripped through the tail. 178 on a Whitchurch pitch should be an easy chase. Whitchurch started solidly adding 39 for the first wicket. Credicott (32) followed almost immediately. Last week's heroes with the bat, the Barriball brothers, then had another fine partnership adding 72 for the third wicket. Billy Barriball was the first to fall for 30. Charlie continued his rich vein of form, taking his side to the brink of victory before being leg before for 68. There was a brief wobble as Durman returned to take 3-9 as three wickets fell on 170. However, the tail held firm and saw Whitchurch home with more than six overs to spare, enabling Whitchurch to claim a maximum 22 points and ease any relegation fears.
