Whitchurch v Philanthropists

THE Philanthropists have had an annual friendly match against Whitchurch for many years.

This year was one of the best with fine performances from both sides.

Batting first Whitchurch were pinned down by some accurate bowling, particularly from Cathy Griffen (1-6 off 8 overs).

Dunne and Megicks went early but that brought in Josh Vernon.

Vernon scored a magnificent 106 not out featuring many trademark straight drives. He was ably assisted by veteran Steve Hodge (27).

In reply Philanthropists also lost two early wickets as father and son Hodges both captured a wicket.

Jeffrey (65) and Payne (55) made big inroads into the total and appeared to be taking control of the match before Josh Vernon came on to bowl.

The young bowler took three quick wickets and both sides started to watch the scoreboard with interest.

Stripling (9 not out) and Ellard (10no) played cautiously and edged towards the required total.

The youngsters of Whitchurch fielded superbly and the game ended with the scores level; a result enjoyed by both sides.
