IT was a sad loss for all at Tavistock Specials FC as their top goal scorer, teammate and friend Tom Wakenshaw lost his battle against his illnes on Saturday.

Tom, aged 26, joined the Specials in 2010 and was a key player who helped them win the Devon FA Ability Counts league two in the 2010-11 season.

Club co-founder Allen Lewis said on behalf of the Specials: 'Tom was a gentlemen and a friend. He had amazing talent as a footballer and was very well known and extremely popular with local lads in our area.

'He had previously played for Graham Eyles at Plymouth Argyle's Disability squad and had proved himself a very talented footballer.

'We all loved seeing his nimble feet and quick turns on the pitch and his lethal finishing when he scored!'

Newton Soccability FC also loved Tom and their manager Kev Shap is devastated by the news.

Allen added: 'On behalf of all the Tavispecials members, coaches and friends we wish to say a sad farewell to Tom and send our condolences to his wife and family.

'I know all our team would agree with my words that it was a huge honour and privilege to work with Tom Wakenshaw. We will all miss him terribly.'
