SPECTATORS sitting outside in the sun were entertained to some exciting tennis as the finalists battled it out to win their categories in the knock out tournament at Tavistock Tennis Club, which has been played throughout the season.
The ever energetic Phil Harbottle won yet another men's singles 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 against a very determined Tony Du'Gay. The ladies singles was won by Claire Glanville against Maggie Lilley 4-3.
The club is delighted to welcome Claire, a former Junior champion, back to Tavistock after a long absence, while Maggie, a fairly new member, has contributed her considerable talent to the tennis league matches this year.
The finalists in the mixed tournament were John White and Maggie Lilley who beat Andy Hutton and Alison West 6-1, 6-2. The ladies doubles was won by Wendy George and Claire Glanville, who came from behind to win 6-3, 6-0 against Alison West and Liz Webb.
The mens' doubles has been postponed because one of the finalists was taking part in a Charity Cycle ride from Lands End to John O'Groats.
The tournament was organised by Linden Hardisty, who is also the club's resident coach. The cups were presented by the president, David Isaac, who praised the contestants for their participation and congratulated the winners on their achievements.
Mike Prout, social secretary and helpers organised the barbecue which was a great success.
The finals of the junior knock out tournament were played prior to the senior tournament.
The under 18 boys was won by Peter Bradley who beat Jack Glover 6-0, 6-0.
Under 18 Girls — Amber Massey beat Aishling Massey 6-3, 6-2. Under 16 boys — Tom Briggs beat Alfie Beattie 6-3, 6-1.
