Devon and Exeter seven South Zeal United 3

Cheriton Fitzpaine 1

HAVING only played one match in the previous few weeks South Zeal were keen to ensure that no rust had set in to the smooth run of victories which they have enjoyed thus far this season.

Cheriton Fitzpaine have pushed South Zeal close in the corresponding fixture earlier in the season. The game started in a frenetic style, with both teams keen to get into the ascendancy as soon as possible. Cheriton were playing down the slope and were conscious that this would be their golden opportunity to put pressure on the still undefeated South Zeal side. This hope was realised only five minutes in, when a clumsy challenge in the 18 yard box led to a penalty in favour of the Cherries. Their centre back stepped up and sent Eddy Jones the wrong way to make it 1-0 to Cheriton.

South Zeal were now slightly under the cosh with this being the first time they had been behind in a match. However, the comradership and will to fight for each other came to the fore, with captain Harley Cann, vice captain Darren Gilbert leading the charge. Also prominent was man of the match Harry Smith.

Some excellent chances came and went, with the home attacking players pressurising from the flanks, with Harry Smith and Ryan Dennis having great joy down the left wing. This pressure soon led to a goal, with Ryan Dennis crossing for Samuel Jones to tap in from six yards and the teams went in all square at half-time.

Cheriton rallied at the start of the second half and managed some time in the South Zeal half, without ever creating any quality chances. Eventually, South Zeal scored their second goal thanks to Darren Gilbert's pace, control and undoubted quality on front of goal. The game was by no means over and South Zeal had to remain sharp to try and close the lid on Cheriton. Matty Dennis was superb at the centre of the home back four and Scott Tremain showed great battling qualities in the centre of the park.

South Zeal sealed the game with five minutes remaining, when substitute Kieran Anderson swooped to finish, putting the result beyond doubt. This victory keeps South Zeal top of the league with ten wins out of ten.

l On Saturday South Zeal Utd are away to Hemyock seconds in the league, kick-off 2.15pm.
