THE Lambs bounced back from their set back when they lost at home to Appledore mid week, by defeating league leaders Teignmouth at Langsford Park.
The home team was without the services of Josh Robbins (suspended) but welcomed the return of influential mid fielder Dave Hallett back from injury.
Both teams got off to a fast start, playing some really good football. It was the home team that came closest in the opening minutes when Kelvin Fyneboy produced a fine run into the penalty area and looked to have been tripped, but the referee waved play on.
The visitors then showed that they were a good attacking force with winger Sam Chapman looking a real threat. It was he that went really close to scoring, but his shot sailed over the bar.
The Lambs were then awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area but Hallett's shot was just out of reach of the onrushing Aaron Hulme and Fyneboy, and went just wide of the target.
In the 20th minute the visitors took the lead when another fine move resulted in Martin Piper making a fine save to deny Ryan Bush, but the ball fell to Sam Chapman, his shot was goal bound, and even a last ditch attempted goal line clearance by Luke Rundle, could not stop the ball crossing the line.
This set back saw the Lambs up the tempo of their game as Fyneboy's fierce drive, which looked goal bound, was blocked by a defender, and the ball ran away for a corner kick. Back came the visitors and it was Chapman once again that had a shot well saved by Piper in the home goal. Charlton Farnham then tested visiting goal keeper Ian Jones and then Fyneboy saw his shot deflected for a corner kick. Lewis Daw saw his header from the place kick go inches wide of the target.
The Lambs equalised in the 35th minute when a corner kick by Farnham saw Daw rise high and power an unstoppable header in the net. Within two minutes the home team took the lead, following a great move between Farnham and Fyneboy, saw the ball fall to Dan Follett — his thunderous shot crashed back off the cross bar, the ball fell to Aaron Hulme, who blasted the ball home from ten yards.
Hulme and Follett combined well, but Follett's shot went inches over the bar.
The second half started at a furious pace with both teams playing fast attacking football, hence the game was flowing from end to end. Teignmouth almost equalised early on, when a good passing move down the left saw a cross into the penalty area which found Reed unmarked, but his shot cannoned back off the base of the upright and was cleared to safety.
The Lambs should have increased their lead when goal keeper Jones was way off his line; Farnham beat his defender and he tried to lob the keeper, but his effort looped too high and the keeper managed to recover and catch the ball on the goal line.
The home team increased their lead 12 minutes into the second period when Fyneboy and Farnham combined well down the left, Farnham's pass found Hulme and he cut into the penalty area and drilled a right foot shot low into the corner of the net, to bag his second goal of the afternoon.
Back came the visitors and Martin Piper was called upon to make a smart save from a fine shot by substitute Matt Eves.
Hallett then produced a great 50 yard cross field pass to Farnham who cut in from the left but his powerful shot was deflected out for a corner kick.
The visitors continued to try and get back into the game but the home defence looked a lot more resilient and kept Teignmouth at bay. In the 81st minute Clark and substitute Lewis Edwards combined well down the right and Edwards' cross found Helm but his head went inches wide of the far post.
In the 89th minute the visitors could have reduced the deficit when Sam Chapman was put through but he pulled his shot wide of the target.
The Lambs saw out the remaining minute to record a fine hard earned but deserved victory against the league leaders. This was a great result for the Lambs, and keeps them in contention with the top teams with games in hand.
The team performance was great with everyone putting in a real shift to ensure victory. Hallett was back at his best, Follett worked hard in midfield, Harry Southcott had a fine game at left back and both Hulme and Fyneboy put the visitors' defence under pressure throughout the 90 minutes.
Manager Kevin Hendy was delighted with the result and the team performance.
