WEST Devon has a new basketball team in the form of the Tavistock Titans.
Tavistock basketball has existed for many years as a small, casual club run by Mike Dobson, a long time coach and local basketball advocate.
Mike kept the club running and supported many local young players over the years but was forced to discontinue the sessions due to a lack of consistent participation.
Tavistock Titans player/coach Lewis Langton said: ‘The players, who trained once a week, were disappointed to see the club go, so decided to re-establish Tavistock basketball shortly after in the form of open scrimmages once, and eventually, twice a week. These scrimmages continued to run for seven years, through which the numbers and the stability of the group grew consistently. As a result of the success of the club, and the core group of reliable players, the decision was made to enter Tavistock’s first basketball team into organised competition in the Plymouth and District basketball league.’
The club meets at Tavistock Sports Hall on Tuesday evenings. The majority of the players – Lewis Langton, Tom Exley, Lee Johns, Ben Peachey, Pavel Drobek, Allen Bien, Jack Hodge, Josh Douglas, George Conybeare, Mitch Williams, Prince Villanueva, Martyn Akehurst and Luke McClung – are from Tavistock and the surrounding areas.
Their league games are played at Marjons, Plymouth with an 8.20pm tip off; their first game is on Thursday, October 10 against Cross Country Panthers.
