STUDENTS representing schools from across West Devon and Plymouth gathered at the blustery Staddiscombe Playing Fields in Plymstock to compete in qualifiers for the Devon Schools County Cross Country Championships.

Tavistock Athletic Club had a big contingent competing for Devonport and Plymouth High Schools for Girls and Plymouth, Tavistock, Mount Kelly and Ivybridge Colleges across the four different age categories.

The opening race featured both the senior and intermediate girls running together over the same distance and Natasha Farrington (MK) finished second in the senior girls race and Sophie Main (MK) seventh, Elyse Ked-Mac (DHSG) eighth and Charlotte Tilney (MK) 10th in the intermediate girls’ race.

In the next race Tom Brew (MK) finished second in the senior boys event. After this it was the turn of the youngest age groups and the year 7 girls put in some fine performances - Amelia Riggott (MK) finished third, Piper Haffenden (PC) fifth, Freya Page (PC) 10th, Sophie Varcoe (MK) 13th, Penny Jones (DHSG) 17th and Hannah Tilney (MK) was in 23rd place.

The Year 7 boys put in a great effort with the Tavistock College contingent winning the team event. The individual results saw Nicolas Maczugowski come in second, Joel Lake third, Rowan Caldwell 8th and James Crossy in 12th place. Rory Summers (MK) got amongst the top finishers with a fourth place finish.

TAC had nine girls competing in the junior girls event and another fine performance saw the Tavistock College girls secure second place in the team event.

Amelia Riggott (MK) continued her great form this season with a win, Kristyna Cade (IC) came second, Charlotte and Hannah Walker (TC) were sixth and seventh, Izzy Page (PC) eighth, Annabelle Hess (MK) 17th, Emma Luckham (TC) 20th, Emily Sleep (DHSG) 23rd and Lily Dietz (PHSG) 27th.

The final races of the day saw both the junior and intermediate boys produce sterling performances.

Juniors William White, Ewan Dix and Jacob Holland (all from TC) finished second, third and eighth and Noah Bridle (MK) in 38th place whilst the intermediate boys Joe Dix, William Russell and Dan Luckham (all from TC) finished fourth, fifth and seventh respectively.
