Devon two
Plymouth
University 2
Tavistock B 1
FACED with a strong, fast University team, Tavistock fielded a mix of school-age players and old hands.
Tavistock played their best hockey so far this season, linking short, sharp passes that led to Venton opening the score confidently after 11 minutes.
Russell and Jake Walker dominated the midfield and two penalty corners ensued. On the second, Andrews’ push was slipped left to Russell, who slapped the ball confidently past the keeper to extend the lead to 2-0.
At half time Tavistock foolishly relaxed. The University came out hard and fast, determined to get back in the match. Tavistock’s defence was caught too far upfield, only Campbell remaining between keeper Osborne and several University players. Inevitably, the ball found the net and Tavistock had to dig deep to defend their lead until the end of the match.
The 2-1 final score was a fair reflection of the game. Tavistock prevailed because they played with more structure, soaked up the speed and aggression of the University side and played more effective team hockey.
Kurzman for Tavistock B impressed up front, well supported by new squad member Dom Walker on the wing. At the back Cull had a very solid game and Gunther and Kirwin tackled hard.
