SIXTEEN runners from Tavistock Athletic Club took the long and winding road to Bideford for the 21st running of the half marathon. During those 21 years the course has proved a happy hunting ground for athletes looking for a personal best time, and Sunday was no exception.

The course takes the runners for a mile before heading out of town on the undulating A386 towards Torrington. Just before Torrington the runners turn left onto the Tarka Trail and follow the river Torridge downstream for six miles back to Bideford.

The Tarka Trail provides a straight, flattish, foot on the gas route for the runners helping them to chase that all important personal best.

The cold rainy conditions were not helpful – but nonetheless the 16 Tavistock athletes faired exceptionally well amongst the 850 finishers.

First home for the club in his last race in the veteran 50 category was Martin Exley-Deane in 1 hour 21minutes (overall 24th and vet 50 category winner), followed by Mr Consistent Pete Bazeley, 1.36.01 (overall 170th). Coming home in a new pb was David Twine in 1.36.10 (186th) and following him was Andy Houghton with a pb by two minutes finishing in 1.38.48 (218th overall and 3rd V65).
