TAVISTOCK Amateur Boxing Club’s Pete Jarman travelled to Yate in Gloucestershire last month to take on Alex Butters from Synwell ABC.
Pete, who sas only started boxing in the ring, was the taller fighter, his opposition more powerfully built but a just little shorter.
His coach Tony Fennell said: ’From the first bell Pete had to avoid hard punches and occasional haymakers. In reply his accurate left jabs and right crosses were scoring points. Just after the mid-point of the round Pete let his guard drop momentarily and was caught by a powerful punch, which saw him go to the canvas. He was up quickly and received a standing eight count. showing great resolve and heart Pete increased his work rate for the remainder of the round.
‘In round two Pete’s work rate and accurate punching was bearing fruit as he put his man down, but following the eight count he was unable to capitalise further. His superior fitness was now beginning to tell and his opponent was resorting to increasing numbers of wild swinging blows.
‘Round three saw Pete accelerate the work rate again and he was at his best in this round, his superior fitness showing, but he still had to be aware of the occasional heavy punches thrown his way from an opponent now relying on strength alone to win.
‘Pete Jarman was declared winner by unanimous decision. He continues to learn from these early bouts in this sport and has the attitude to do well.’
