THE Summer Solstice Fell race took place from the Dartmoor Inn at Merivale on June 19 - the third time the event has been held.

Some 70 senior runners and five juniors from eight years upwards took part.

The first male home was Andy Connor in 39 minutes 59 seconds and the first lady was Naomi Shaw in 52.40. The men’s time is again a course record and may prove hard to beat, say organisers.

After a changeable forecast, the weather came good just in time with a lovely evening and perfect temperature for running.

For the first time junior races were held with three different distances - all completed the routes with style.

Most runners stayed for prize giving which was held outside in an atmosphere of considerable bonhomie. Prizes were presented by Nick Fell - the Fells own the nearby farm.

Organiser Andy Houghton said: ‘Nick graciously allowed us the use of the field just behind the pub. The two principal prizes were kindly donated by Tesco Ltd and, as always, thanks should go to the Dartmoor National Park Authority, The Duchy of Cornwall, local commoners and the military for dealing with all matters in a friendly and constructive way. Of course the event would be completely impossible without the support of the Fell Running Association who provide the race licence.’
