MID Devon Hunt Pony Club member Tom Bayley has just returned from competing at the Pony Club National Tetrathlon Championships held at Bishop Burton College in Yorkshire. This is the first year that a junior class has been included in the championships and Tom finished in 9th place in a class of 44 boys. His final score of 4,627 points was less than 100 points behind the 3rd placed competitor. The competition started with Tom's weakest phase, the shooting; his score of 780 was disappointing, but not disastrous. Next to the pool, for the three minute swim, where he swam a personal best of eight lengths 23 metres. Tom's swim score has improved by almost two lengths in the last 12 months. The riding course was daunting, but beautifully presented and Tom had a great round, going clear with no time penalties. The final phase was the running, which is his great strength and he finished the 1,500 metre course in a PB time of 4 mins 49 secs, the 3rd fastest of the day. Meanwhile, back in July, Mid Devon's Rob Bilton had a couple of days at the Spooners PC's annual Tetrathlon. Competing in the novice mini class, Rob started the day with the best shoot in his class, scoring 960 points, which was a personal best score. After finishing 2nd in the swimming phase, Rob then produced the best run in the class and won the Triathlon phase of the competition. Not to be out done, team mate Christopher Wrey competed in the mixed mini class finished with the best time and came 3rd in his class. The riding phase was held at Sampford Spiney and Rob's good form continued, riding a clear round to secure 1st place in the Tetrathlon. Harry Robinson rode clear in the mixed minis and the Mid Devon team of Rob, Harry and Tom Bayley finished 6th overall, in a class of 14 teams.
