NEWTOWN provided a tough test for South Zeal on Saturday dominating the early play with some slick attacking football.

Only good defensive play by Tom Reilly and Graham Soby in the centre of the South Zeal defense, coupled with a superb goalkeeping performance by Oliver Holman, kept the scores level in the first 25 minutes.

After that the dual threat of South Zeal's Harley Cann and Darren Gilbert started to take effect as Harley had a header disallowed for offside and Darren twice out stripped the Newtown defence only to see his shot go narrowly wide.

The home side went 1-0 up when Ben Davey put Darren Gilbert through down the right and his cross come shot confused the Newtown keeper and found the far side of the net.

Leading at the start of the second half Zeal now had the measure of the visitors forwards and a series of attacks prompted by Daniel Gibbs and Lee GIlbert eventually saw Harley Cann Score from close range after a lovely ball from Redd Cann set up the chance

Scott Hooper and Nick Pollard both went close to increase South Zeal's lead but apart from the odd half chance Newtown tried in vain to get back into the game and in the final 10 minutes the home side squandered several easy chances but had secured all three points against a good Newtown side.
