AS the new season got under way in the Tavistock Social Club's Snooker League it was a tough slog for West Devon C who needed all the skills of gnarled veteran Hodge to pull it out of the bag for his team in a last frame decider against West Devon D. At the Conservative Club it was last season's bottom side Conservative C who took a shock two frame lead, only to be denied victory by Derek Flack, who took the black ball final frame to get Conservative Z out of the mire. West Devon D team took the early initiative as Shoulders (22) edged out Grigg in a close finish. The next frame was far from close as Pinkney hit a 'purple' patch with 37 and 25 breaks as he left May reeling to level the scores. Elliott continued the C team run with a good win over the normally solid Murton. A father and son meeting provided the D team with a levelling win with son Paul proving too strong for his father Roger, in the battle of the Shrimptons. In the final deciding frame Conservative C team's Hodge merrily waltzed away with a resounding victory over Decieco, falling just short of a 100 score line in the process. Jankowski for Conservative Z looked rusty against a confident Rob Neale in the first frame and paid the price. Next to the table came the skipper of the Con Z team, Brian Palmer, against new signing Martyn Roffey. After 45 minutes of of cat and mouse Roffey finally took the frame after a series of snookers left Palmer struggling and with little chance to fight back. Cath Friend for Con C was left reeling by her old team mate McKechnie, who notched up a creditable 70 against Friend's 17. Trev Symons for the Z Team got his team back into the action with a fine win over Colin Whiley in his debut game for the C team. All even as the last frame got under way. Derek Flack for Con Z stood toe to toe with the Con C's captain, Clive Jago. With no quarter asked or given, a tight and hard fought frame, 34-37, was finally resolved with Flack taking the black and the game.
