Devon D Seaton v Whitchurch AFTER the heroics of the previous week against Filleigh, Whitchurch were brought back to earth with a crushing defeat away to Seaton. The 120 mile round trip brought little in the way of joy as Whitchurch were beaten by 52 runs. Seaton batted first and started at a good tempo hitting 56 off the first 10 overs. Towl (0 for 48) bowled a couple of tight maidens but these were sandwiched between overs punished by Perry (35). First change bowlers Kerswill (1-22) and Charlie Barriball (1-33) put the brakes on as they both took a wicket in their first over. A good run out and Seaton briefly wobbled at 87-4. Waterhouse (59) and Walker (38) put on 75 runs after the drinks break easing any concerns Seaton may have had. The last eight overs saw another 50 runs added as Seaton went after points and a total of 214. Bone (4-56) picking up some useful bowling points for the side but at some cost. In reply, Whitchurch started promisingly. Credicott (11) and Bone (34) putting on 40 for the first wicket gave Whitchurch hope. After Credicott was bowled two more went cheaply; Billy Barriball's fine run of form ending at the seaside. Woodrow (47) gave some backbone to the innings as first Bone and then Ben Powell (16) took the score to 125-5. Once Woodrow went, the recognised batsmen were back in the pavilion and the win/lose format meant the run rate was around eight an over. The pressure proved to be too much. Wickets fell cheaply and, in the end, Whitchurch fell well short, failing to pick up more crucial batting points. They next face promotion chasing Babbacombe who have lost only one fixture this season.
