A FINE all round performance by vice captain Gary Sizmur coupled with a cultured 63 not out by Billy Searle were behind of a five wicket win for Chagford over a competitive Ashburton side.
Batting first and soon being 27-2 Ashburton recovered well with the ever reliable Chris Pascoe and Antony Lacey taking the attack to the Chagford bowlers and it looked like Ashburton were on theiir way to a large total. However, the introduction of Gary Sizmur into the attack proved positive with his accurate bowling slowing the scoring.
Pascoe was well caught by Arnie Searle for 38. with the score at 82-3 . Lacey and and Ashley Harvey took the score to 106 before Lacey was run out for 23 and Harvey followed for 28. The Ashburton tail staged a recovery and from 153-7, the innings closed at 201-8 with Dominic West 19 and Marcus West 21 not out. Chris Pascoe was top scorer on 38.
Gary Sizmur was the pick of the Chagford attack with 2-39, showing the value of line and length on an excellent wicket with a fast outfield. There were 33 wides.
In reply facing some hostile fast bowling from Tom Durman and Marcus West, Chagford's Gary Sizmur and Pete Holland had a stand of 26 for the first wicket before Holland was dismissed for 26.
Billy Searle and Sizmur engaged in a stand of 61 before the latter was out for a well struck 36. Paterson (7) Chadwick (15) ) all followed, but Billy Searle entertained the spectators with some effortless cover drives and one six.. The score was 152-5 with the dismissal of Arnie Searle for 5.
The entry of skipper Del Lammonby, (24 not out) signalled all out attack, and in quickfire stand of 50 saw Chagford home with 5 wickets to spare.
Billy Searle in a match winning innings finished on 63 not out.
The Ashburton attack stuck to their task well with Ashley Harvey outstanding with 2-50 in his 13 overs.
