Fishermen’s Shield

Tavistock U16s 31

South Molton U16s 7

IN the final round of the Fisherman’s cup Tavistock U16s (pictured above) needed a win and bonus point by scoring four tries to get into the final.

The pitch was heavy and Tavistock had the wind behind their backs in the first half and so they were first to score with Toby Teague diving over the line and Zac Gorton scoring the conversion.

There were plenty of handling errors and the referee was asserting his control on the game but Tavistock continued to break through with Laurence Stewart, Archie Allen and John Lord all putting in some great tackles.

The Tavistock forwards started to dominate and Toby scored again quickly followed with a try from prop forward Joe Burbage.

Toby scored again for the key fourth try after a fine kick from full back James Paxman. which put Tavistiock in a great position five yards out for a 24-0 lead at half-time.

However, they were not helped when they went down to 14 players due to a yellow card.

South Molton came back with a try and conversion.

A slight wobble could have let South Molton back into the game, but great work from Ben Redwood, Jude White and Jack Smyly kept Tavistock strong and, inevitably, it was Toby that got a final try to take the score to 31-7.

Tavistock qualify for the shield final on April 30 and await to find out if their opponents will be Okehampton or Torquay, the match due to be played in Brixham.
