TAVISTOCK RFC 1st XV coach Leigh Puttock was quick to pinpoint the main work-on for his side after they lost 61-26 at home to Honiton first time out in Devon One.

Honiton were 38-17 ahead the half-time – three tries in the opening 17 minutes gave them control – and outscored Tavvy four scores to one in the second half.

The closest Tavistock got was 28-14 down when James Lamb winged in 10 minutes before half time.

Said Puttock: “We defended as individuals, but that will be sorted out.”

The plus point wasn’t hard to find either when tries were counted up.

“Honiton are a strong team with an equally strong defence so for us to put four tries on them was a real plus.,” said Puttock. ‘They will ‘nil’ a few teams this year.”

Lamb with two in the first half, Liam Watts and Ollie Plummer were the Tavistock try scorers. Freddie Fuller added the goal points.

It was Plummer’s try with four minutes left on the watch that earned Tavistock a bonus point.

Honiton may have ran up an impressive scoreline but they’re not quite at the summit of the standings after the opening weekend.

With a 69-21 win away at Crediton IIs, Exeter Saracens earned themselves an early lead.

Following Honiton in second, Topsham IIs and Plymstock Oaks are third and fourth respectively. Topsham were 52-17 victors on the road against Withycombe whilst Plymstock prevailed at home, beating Brixham IIs 52-20.

The two tightest games of the day saw Exmouth IIs prevail 26-7 over Old Plymothian & Mannamedian and South Molton edge out Bideford by eight points.
