AS a prelude to their league campaign which starts next week, Tavistock Colts treated their supporters to a gutsy performance against a combative Torquay side.
The home side showed their intent at the breakdown from the off with Will Gardner and Theo Cousins battling hard to maintain possession. Ben Milligan looked to run from deep at every opportunity from full back and Bernie Sadler tackled strongly in the centre.
Tavistock’s first try came when space was made for winger Jack Base on the right hand side and he burst through a couple of tackles to score.
This seemed to fire Torquay up and they recycled a good ball from the forwards to create a try for their winger. Tavistock then bounced back by using their pack to push them forward.
Tavistock’s Joe Sellers, Seb Cox and Ben Luke all made inroads into the Torquay defence and after several drives right on the Torquay line the referee awarded Tavistock a penalty try after a series of infringements had prevented them from scoring. Jono Wisdom converted.
Tavistock then had a bit of a purple patch and were unlucky not to add further scores before they lost Will Gardner to a yellow card. This opened the door to Torquay who equalised the score with their second try and a conversion.
The start of the second half ebbed and flowed between the two teams but as it progressed Tavistock started to build a bit of momentum. Alex Lewandowski drove his team forward and Joe Sellers and Seb Cox carried strongly with Ethan Lamerton and Billy Rowe putting in several great tackles. Chris Watts and Jono Wisdom put in a number of high kicks, Billy McNicol and Bernie Sadler chasing them aggressively. Morgan Warnett gave another dogged display on the flank and on the right wing while Jack Base had a couple of opportunities. With ten minutes to go Bernie Sadler and Sean Donnelly made space for him and he broke clear to score with an outstretched arm to seal the win.
