OKEHAMPTON Otters Rookie Lifesavers celebrated successfully achieving their bronze and silver Rookie Lifesavers awards.

During the one hour training sessions, the young lifesavers improve their swimming, develop survival skills and learn how to help others among friends and with lots of fun.

The Rookies have learnt how to rescue a person at risk of drowning without danger to themselves, how to give first aid and, most importantly, water confidence, avoiding hazards and how to survive. Each stage of their progress is marked by the award of a certificate and badge.  Later, as teenagers, many qualify as lifesavers by the award of the prestigious bronze medallion, which is often used to support their Sport GCSE and Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

A new Rookie group is being formed for 8 year-olds and over, who should already be able to swim four lengths continuously and with confidence.

For further information call Tony Clark on 01837 840283 or meet at the Okehampton Parklands Swimming Pool at 6 pm on Friday for a taster session.
