THE annual Tavistock Wheelers Hill Climb took place on Sunday with riders climbing from Merrivale up to Princetown.

There was a record entry of 46 riders, all of whom were members of Tavistock Wheelers or Okehampton Cycling Club.

Weather conditions were excellent and some superb times were recorded. The overall winner, Dan Strong completed the climb in just over seven and a half minutes.

The climb was followed by a downhill free-wheeling event which tends to favour the heavier bike riders rather than the whippet like fast climbers.

The club was extremely proud that nine junior riders took part as well as six lady riders. There was a prize giving ceremony at the Fox Tor Cafe in Princetown and a large number of trophies were given for the different age groups.

The club thank all the people who helped to organise and support the hill climb.

There was even time for an impromptu visit from Sky Cycling's Jonathan Tiernon-Locke who was passing through Merivale on a training ride when he found himself in the middle of the hill climb. ( see pic)
