CHILDREN from eight Primary Schools in Tavistock and the surrounding areas took part in the annual School’s Swimming Gala on March 9.

Held at the newly refurbished Meadowlands Leisure Pool, the annual event saw swimmers compete in individual and team events in all swimming strokes against swimmers from competing schools.

The eight schools included; Gulworthy, Horrabridge, Mary Tavy and Brentor, Milton Abbot, St Andrew’s, St Peter’s, Tavistock, Whitchurch – with some schools entering two teams.

This year the competition was fierce, with 2017 winners Tavistock County Primary School having to work hard to retain their title.

In the end Tavistock A, tied for top prize in the large schools’ competition with St Andrew’s A and St Peter’s. The runners-up were Horrabridge.

Competition was equally tough for the small schools, with another two schools tying for first place; Mary Tavy and Brentor and Milton Abbot with the runners up Gulworthy.

Swimmers were not only competing to score the most points overall, but also the award for ‘fair play’.

This year, it was unanimously agreed that Whitchurch Primary School showed the best team spirit and most sporting attitude.

The event, organised by Sheila Radgick on behalf of Tavistock Swimming Club was sponsored by Fusion Lifestyle, Meadowlands.

The competition would not have run as smoothly as it did or be as enjoyable as it was without the excellent work of volunteers from Tavistock Swimming Club.
