THE Bere Alston Trekkers presented Rear Admiral (retired) Rich Cheadle and Carole Arnold of the Royal British Legion with a bumper cheque for £7,137.32 which was raised by club's Poppy Run on November 11 (11/11/11.)

Marking the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion the Poppy Run developed into an 11.11mile run to take place on 11/11/11. Despite the rain there were 97 runners from all over the West Country registered and ready to run.

After a two minute silence the charity run was started by Alice Brimacombe, who was 11 on the day.

The run took in five war memorials at Harrowbeer (old RAF memorial site), Crapstone, Horrabridge, Walkhampton, Sheepstor, Meavy and back to Yelverton at which the runners paid their respects, and passed three primary schools Horrabridge, Walkhampton and Meavy who did the runners proud by cheering them on and supplying refreshments.

The run was over bridal paths, roads, moorland and bogs. Great support was given by Dartmoor Rescue and other organisations.

Derek Hicks, who led the participants on the run, told the Times: 'The runners returned looking like drowned rats but all agreed what an amazing, unique run it had been and how much they had all enjoyed it.'
