TAVISTOCK boat builder and independent joiner Paul Hutchins put down his chisels, planes and woodworking tools last weekend to take part in a different type of outdoor challenge — by running in the Exmoor Mountain Marathon.

The 24 year-old from Mary Tavy took the gold medal in the event, finishing first some six minutes ahead of his next competitor.

'I never expected to win it, just finishing it would have been great,' said Paul after the event.

'I spend hours working in the workshop and wanted to get out into the fresh air and do something a little different. I love Dartmoor and found a running event on the internet for the Exmoor Marathon and thought that sounds like fun."

Paul finished in an incredible 3hrs 44 minutes — just seven seconds off the course record and well ahead of all the other 200 athletes that took part in the gruelling 26.9 mile off-road and cross-country race.

The picturesque marathon has massive hill climbs with a total ascent of 5,251 feet around Exmoor and the rugged coast of North Devon.

'If I'd thought I might win it, I would have looked for a charity to run it for and raise some money for them,' he added.

'So now I am looking for a new challenge, maybe a running event or anything really, but this time for charity.'
