KELLY College have five swimmers at the Paralympic Games taking place in London — and all have impressed on the international arena.
Lauren Steadman and Louise Watkin, both Old Kelleians are yet to compete, and Louise will be hoping to improve on her silver and three bronze medals from Beijing.
Claire Cashmore (Old Kelleian) who was born without a left forearm and who won bronze medals at Athens and Beijing has won silver in the SB8 100m breaststroke in 1.20.50 and placed seventh in the final of the S9 100m butterfly.
Ellen Keane, representing Ireland, has still to compete in her best event, the S9 100m breaststroke, but was placed eighth in the S9 100m butterfly final.
Hannah Russell (16) at her first Paralympic Games swam a brilliant race to take silver in the S12 400m freestyle in 4.38.60, which was a six second personal best and then followed this up with a bronze medal in the S12 100m butterfly.
Hannah still has more events to compete in and is hopeful of improving her medal tally. Hannah will be joining Kelly College straight after the Paralympic Games finish.
Director of swimming at Kelly College Robin Brew told the Times: 'Kelly College and the swim squad staff are delighted with the success of our current and former Kelly swimmers at the Paralympic Games in these opening days.
'The best is still yet to come as many of their strongest events fall towards the last four days of the swimming programme. Watch out for Louise Watkin and Hannah Russell as they have the potential to collect multi medals in a range of events over these days.
'Hannah will be joining Kelly straight after the Games and we will work hard to be prepare her for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the World IPC Championships in 2014.
'Kelly's Ellen Kean will also be representing Ireland in the S9 100m breaststroke where she is currently ranked 5th in the world.
'These impressive results reflect the need for the 50m Olympic Legacy Pool which will be coming to Kelly and Tavistock after the games are complete.
'Almost all of what has been achieved to date is down to the skill and expertise of our coaching team and also from our creative use of our special four-lane 25m pool. The new 50m pool will put us on even terms with the rest of the world and will make a huge difference to the development and preparation of all our swimmers at Kelly.'
