OKEHAMPTON Hockey Club are delighted after being chosen as joint Devon Sport Awards 2012 'Club of the Year' along with Croyde Surf Club.
The awards were presented by British number one lady pistol shooter Gorgs Geikie from South Tawton and Keryn Seal, a member of England's Blind Football squad.
Okehampton Hockey Club have expanded its youth development programme to two, one hour sessions every Saturday morning with more than 50 youngsters regularly attending. This is only possible due to a dedicated team of coaches, senior club players and young leaders, overseen by the club's inspirational level two coaches, Richard and Jane Jones.
The club organises teams for both girls and boys to compete in the Devon U12 and U14 tournaments.
The club was also recognised for coaches voluntarily leading after school clubs at local primary schools, utilising QuickSticks, to introduce children to hockey,
In partnership with Stuart Lord at the Okehampton Community Recreation Association the hosted the annual 'QuickSticks' Festival where more than 200 local Year 6 children attended. The level one and two coaches were ably assisted by ten, 15-18 year old junior club members.
The Club had the responsibility for coaching and organising the West Devon teams for the Devon Games to Inspire.
Among its many achievements Okehampton Hockey Club was awarded England Hockey's, 'Clubs First' accreditation and encourages their youngsters to follow the example of their level one umpires.
