JOSH Coyne from Okehampton Cycling Club earned a great victory in the Brentor Road Race earlier this month.
The 46 mile race, organised by the Tavistock Wheelers, is the first of a two race series sponsored by Velo-smith.com on the fast and challenging Brentor Circuit.
Running on loops around Brentor it was attritional as always with the original peloton of 50 being whittled down lap by lap, with plenty of attacks flying in the first half of the race.
Josh told Times Sport: ‘I kept an eye on the stronger riders and tried to use as little energy as possible, on the penultimate climb I attacked up the climb to take the bell (one lap to go) solo.
‘I kept the pressure on going into time trial mode for the final lap. About halfway around the lap another rider from Penzance Wheelers bridged across to me, we worked until the final corner where we had 35 seconds on the peloton, a solid gap for one lap’s work! Just one more duel up the climb to go, I tried to play cat and mouse with him best I could but he was staying put behind me out of the wind. I launched my sprint earlier than usual despite it dragging up hill and managed a good initial kick and found a second wind in the final few meters to win by a bike length or two.
‘The support from club mates and coach Nigel from BPM coaching probably helped that! Super happy to take the win in the first mass start race of the year, winter training has obviously been good! Plenty more to come throughout the year with hopefully a few more victories! Huge thanks to BPM coaching and Oke Cycles for all the support.’
The second race will take place on May 27.
