Devon D Babbacombe v Whitchurch firsts WHITCHURCH won the toss and invited their guests. Barriball made an early breakthrough with a wicket in the first over but that only brought Kingdon to the crease. Kingdon soon found his fluency and dominated the scoring. He'd completed his half century with only 65 on the board. Whitchurch's bowling was disciplined and their fielding improved but a few dropped catches proving costly. Kingdon had been missed on 28 and went on to complete a deserved century. Kingdon and Pugh (18) had added 99 for the third wicket when Pugh was smartly caught by Kerswill (1 for 21). Other than Kerswill, the Whitchurch bowlers struggled to stem the tide of runs. Kingdon finally holed out to a catch in the deep by Barriball for 138. That left South African Van Wyk to take up the baton. Whitchurch attacked the other end with Barriball taking 3 for 57. Babbacombe closed on 297-9. In reply, Whitchurch were simply blown away. Only Ben Powell and extras achieved double figures as Van Wyk (3-25), Kingdon (3-27) and Bates (3-2) dismissed Whitchurch for a paltry 63. While that was a heavy defeat, Babbacombe are serious contenders for promotion. n Whitchurch are away to Honiton on Saturday with greater hopes of success. Whitchurch firsts are away to Babbacombe, while the seconds are home to Abbotskerswell; there is a Sunday friendly Fortescue; Tuesday TEL side are away to South Petherwin.
